Album Review: Best Friends Split EP by Robins/ Baltimore Cuts

Robins/Baltimore Cuts – Best Friends Split Release Date: August 27, 2013 Sorry Girls Records Rating: 9/10 For Fans Of:  Grown Ups, CSTVT, Dikembe Written by Ben Curttright The Best Friends split EP is the first official release by Philadelphia-based Sorry Girls Records, though they have put out some of Baltimore Cuts’ demos over the past few months. And, for two new bands on a new label, Best Friends is an extremely well put-together release. The A-side of the split features two new songs from Robins. “Welcome to Future City”, the opener, is emo punk at its finest; the guitars would sound at home behind clean vocals, but matching them with rough screaming instead makes for a unique feel. The ending of “Welcome to Future City” is too hardcore breakdown-esque for me, but the quality of “That High, That Quick”, their second song, more than makes up for it. “That High, That Quick” has a much more upbeat punk feel, though the cleverly tapped guitar in the verse keeps i

Single Review: Meteor by State Faults

State Faults - Meteor  No Sleep Records   State Faults' new single, "Meteor", is an interesting proposition.  Teaming together panicked screams and somewhat math-y instrumentation, the track is a masterclass in how to make your listener feel like the world is ending.  The band themselves explained "Meteor" as trying to convey a panic attack through music and, by jove, they succeed.  Despite its brevity, "Meteor" suggest we should be very excited for the band's upcoming No Sleep Records debut. Johnny Andrews'  strained, incoherent screams sound almost painful and, whilst it isn't exactly pleasant, his vocal performance is the reason people scream over music. With earphones in, his screams block out the world and leave you exhilarated and, possibly, a little angrier than you were before you pressed play.  The instrumentation isn't quite as all-consuming, however the band strike a chord with their somewhat discordant but not incred

Dowsing Is Downsizing

Dowsing has lost two members, Marcus and Delia. Check out the statement below.   Moving Forward This past weekend after a band discussion we asked Marcus and Delia to leave Dowsing. It was neither an easy decision nor one that was met with enthusiasm. In order to move forward as a band we needed to address issues that are not worth repeating on the Internet. Our relationship with Marcus and Delia is hopeful for friendship and understanding. The worst thing that could happen out of all of this is to lose them completely from our lives. Though it is difficult at this time for us all to see eye-to-eye on this decision we hope it will make sense to them someday. We do not expect anyone to agree with our choice, but we are certain it was the right one. We would like to thank Delia and Marcus for all the sacrifices they have made over the past three years to tour and create music with us. It is undeniable that their contributions to the band will be missed and a void will need to be fil

Single Review: Any Minute Now by Pentimento

Pentimento - Any Minute Now Paper + Plastik Records After a short clean guitar intro, the band  Pentimento  on their new single "Any Minute Now", which was released exclusively on Absolutepunk.net, establish a  Boys Night Out  or  The Junior Varsity   feel...wait...actually, it sounds oddly similar to  The Junior Varsity's  "Get Comfortable" from their album  Wide-Eyed.    From the bouncy guitars and drums to the melody and even the timbre of the vocals.  Oh well, that's fine I guess.  Those bands' clever mix of emo and post-hardcore never really got over-used, so a little revival of their particular sound might be welcomed.   The chorus somewhat forsakes that and takes a more generic Jimmy Eat World type alternative rock sound with a simple melody and driving chords.        Sounds like a great combination of bands to be compared to, but there are a few flashing red lights on this track which warn that it may not be a good idea to spend

Interview: Nick Stutsman (Park Jefferson) (August 22, 2013)

Hi Nick! Hey Kelly! Thanks for taking the time to do this interview! What are you up to at the moment? Well, I woke up really early for some reason and have been lurking the internet all morning. Park Jefferson just released a record at midnight and the response has been kind of overwhelming. How did the new record come about? Well, for like two years there had been talk of us doing it. We broke up but there was always the possibility of it happening. I went to school for recording and when I came back I figured we should just do it and put it out just to say that it happened. What's changed about PJ's members since the break up? I guess the biggest "change" is that we're still not a band. There's not any permanent members and we're not planning on doing anything else in the future except perhaps some shows here and there. Everyone's gone off to college or doing other things and so there's not a set lineup or any plans to do anything

Single Review: Balance And Composure's Reflections

Balance And Composure - Reflections   Hassle/ No Sleep Records Alternative or post-metal sounding guitars, reminiscent of Deftones, on their new track  Reflections,   make it clear that Balance and Composure mean to be more than just an alt.-rock band that plays sad songs.  Heavy guitars have always been a part of their vocabulary, but now the guitars seem to be supporting the sound with more than just volume dynamics. They give off a new sense of seriousness that compliments their style of emotive music very well. All the while, maintaining their sound is as simple as adding in the occasional twinkly guitar and having the vocals carry the hard hitting lyrics with tarry in the pitch.         There is a lot of room to maneuver with the post-metal sounds, so if Balance and Composure are looking to explore it and merge its sounds more than they have before into their already distinct style,  the upcoming release could be a solid one for their discography and a unique one f

Interview: Arlo Aldo (August 02, 2013)

Who is Arlo Aldo and how did you get together? Arlo Aldo is  David Manchester - Guitar, Vocals Ariel Forbes - Vocals, Keys, Bells, Melodica Susanna Meyers - Vocals, Bass Brandon Forbes - Percussion I moved to Pittsburgh about three and a half years ago from Baltimore, MD. I wanted to start a new band, but I didn't really know anyone yet, so I took to the magic of the internet. Ariel and I were the black sheep of Craigslist. It seemed everyone on there was looking for heavy metal guitarists, or death metal bassists, and here I was putting up a post for female harmonies in a mellow, alt-folk band. My intention was to just be a two piece. I've always been intrigued by the male/female harmony dynamic in contemporary bands like Low, and classics like Jonny and June Carter Cash. After playing together for a few months, Ariel mentioned that her (then) friend (now husband) Brandon was really interested in playing drums. So, we all got together, hung out, played some

Srcvinyl To Reissue Two Far LPs On Vinyl

Formed in 1991, Sacramento , California 's  far  blazed a trail for a generation of alternative rock bands over their 8 year career, garnering critical acclaim at home and abroad by combining heartfelt, dynamic, vocals to unfettered, driving rock songs. The brainchild of Jonah Matranga (OneLineDrawing, New End Original) and Shaun Lopez (Rival Schools, Crosses), far brought  a maturity and sensitivity heretofore unheard among their contemporaries and paved a path for bands like Biffy Clyro, Coheed & Cambria and Thursday, by adding a refreshing emotional muscle to unfettered, driving rock songs. Immediately met with critical acclaim, 1996’s cult classic debut,  Tin Cans With Strings to You  (Immortal/Epic) ,  introduced far to a national audience via an aggressive marketing campaign and touring schedule with the likes of Incubus and Deftones, which brought their unique band of emotional rock to arenas across the nation. In the years that have past, the long out of prin
