Single Review: Any Minute Now by Pentimento

 Pentimento - Any Minute Now
Paper + Plastik Records

After a short clean guitar intro, the band Pentimento on their new single "Any Minute Now", which was released exclusively on Absolutepunk.net, establish a Boys Night Out or The Junior Varsity feel...wait...actually, it sounds oddly similar to The Junior Varsity's "Get Comfortable" from their album Wide-Eyed.   From the bouncy guitars and drums to the melody and even the timbre of the vocals.  Oh well, that's fine I guess.  Those bands' clever mix of emo and post-hardcore never really got over-used, so a little revival of their particular sound might be welcomed.  The chorus somewhat forsakes that and takes a more generic Jimmy Eat World type alternative rock sound with a simple melody and driving chords.

Sounds like a great combination of bands to be compared to, but there are a few flashing red lights on this track which warn that it may not be a good idea to spend money on Pentimento's upcoming EP, which is released October, 22nd. The first being the uninteresting melodies that are not only boring, but are unpredictable in their direction. Another red light is the pop-punk gimmicks which you never get a break from.  A few examples of these gimmicks that this song makes use of are: random screams, whoa-ohs (these are cringe-worthy), vocal and clean guitar breaks and counter melodies in the background vocals.
Pentimento's last release fits much more into a Transit influenced pop-punk classification while this new track has a plethora of sounds that don't really feel like they mesh well.

Early In The Morning by James Vincent McMorrow (2010) (Review)

I've  decided to create a new genre. I call it “beardcore”. Scene heads generally make confessional folk music recorded alone in some isolated building (cabin, hut, beach house etc.) with only acoustic guitars, banjos and whatnot for company. Oh, and they have beards. Now you may think to yourself, ‘This will never take off! How silly of her!’ and, given most of my genre creating, you’d be right (Oberstcore never did take off…), but this scene is not just existing, but is currently thriving. The newest beardcore artist is James Vincent McMorrow’. Joining Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes in the genre, McMorrow hails from the not so green isle of Ireland and is making waves with his debut album Early In The Morning , eleven tracks of atmospheric indie-folk with intelligent musicianship, and more intelligent lyrics. The album starts off with “If I Had A Boat” an initially a capella, atmospheric grower. Starting off quietly, it eases the listener into the record with McMorrow...

Track-By-Track: Forest Life EP by McCafferty

McCafferty 's recent EP, Forest Life, is one of The Alternative Tone's favourite releases so far this year. I caught up with Nick to get a track-by-track on the EP, in order to give us more insight into McCafferty's fabulous imagery and lyrical themes.  Jeff    There was a girl I was friends with in high school named Becky and she was in a relationship with this guy from freshman year until last summer, when their relationship fell apart she told me it happened really fast, that's why the song is so short. I wanted to explore the aspect of a relationship with so much feeling that just ends abruptly and the emptiness that you feel after. I've had people message me and say they wish Jeff was longer, but that's the exact reason I made it so short.  Snakes  I wrote "Snakes" with the mindset of making a song that sort of pokes fun at all these dogs out there in the DIY scene about smoking and partying, it's really simplistic in the lyrics b...

McCafferty Split Up

Sadly, Ohio folk/pop/punkers McCafferty have decided to split up. Read their statement below. Dear Everyone, I'm sorry. It is with great sadness and excitement that I inform you all that McCafferty is coming to an end. I am going to be starting to teach soon, and I am required to get a background check, and I don't believe tha t McCafferty is a professional, respectful representation of myself as a newly trained teacher entering the field of Special Education. Music will always have a place in my heart, but my true passion is teaching. I am leaving the scene of DIY antics to follow my pursuit into adulthood, and I am so happy to have shared my bands music with you all. We truly are the essence of a real DIY band. We came into the scene as a dying star that was doomed to go out in the near future, and that time is now. I have already deleted our twitter/other social media websites but I feel that you all deserve an explanation of what is happening. To all the kids who listen...
