Our third industry folk list comes from Tyler Chau of Long Island's post-hardcore band Sunning. The five piece released the wonderful Losing Youth EP this November and are set to tour with other The Alternative Tone favourites, Haverford, this December.
I listen to this album while driving all the time. I like that they expanded on the pop/indie/rock aspect of the band, but you can still hear aspects of their older releases shine through. "Water song" is my jam for sure on this album. "Indian Burn" is also a good one.
I absolutely adore this album. It makes you feel sad in a happy kind of way, if that even makes sense.
I really like the tones on this album a lot. I feel like they're very relaxing & nothing hits too hard. Perfect for a long drive or something like that.
8. Xerxes - Would You Understand?
2. Tiny Moving Parts - This Couch Is Long & Full of Friendship
I'd heard this band's name around everywhere for the longest time before I decided to check them out. I don't even remember how it happened, but I came across the song "John P" one day & was immediately drawn in by the string arrangement. I fell in love with the rest of the album shortly afterwards. I can't wait to play with them at the end of December.
3. The Front Bottoms - Talon Of The Hawk
4. Have Mercy - The Earth Pushed Back
This record really made me feel some type of way. I listened to this during the entire week of the first Sunning tour. There's just so much raw emotion on this album. I'm glad that we got to play with these guys back in July.
5. Young Statues - Age Isn't Ours
This EP is the first release I heard from this band. My friend Kristen played this in her car a ton when it first came out, so it kind of just rubbed off on me. I find myself listening to this album a lot when I'm getting ready or driving with a specific destination in mind. It has sort of a pick-me-up, "going there" feeling. "Ghost Passenger" is my favorite on this album for sure.
6. Turnover - Magnolia
7. Counterparts - The Difference Between Hell and Home
This album is very, uhm... Counterparts. For sure. They just have this certain sound that I've found appealing since their first release. I find it a bit heavier than "The Current Will Carry Us" but not too blatantly 'chuggish' as "Prophets" was, which I think is a great balance. I'm still waiting for them to write a song as good as "You Think You're John Fucking Locke" though.
8. Xerxes - Would You Understand?
Even though it was very short (two songs), I really enjoyed the heck out of this EP. The first song, "Grinstead" starts off with a very soft & ambient intro, & then everything just explodes when the full band kicks in. That gets me really excited when I listen to it. The second track, "Tramadol" brings the tempo down, but remains a huge cathartic mess of emotions, with a lot of lyrics that I can relate to.
9. Petal - Scout
I'm very captivated by Kiley Lotz's voice. It's very light & airy, & just so pleasant to hear. I discovered this band after seeing them on the Run For Cover Records CMJ showcase flyer. They were amazing live; Kiley can really hit some awesome notes. This was actually the only digital music I purchased this year, & I just picked up the 7" when Run For Cover announced it on Black Friday.
10. Earl Sweatshirt - Doris
This album was worth the wait. Earl just has this way of delivering a continuous flow that makes his style so appealing. I still haven't gotten a chance to see him perform live yet. Hopefully will get a chance to sometime in 2014.
