Albums Of The Year (Industry Folk): Haverford

Next up in our industry folk lists is written by Anthony Stano on behalf of The Alternative Tone favourites Haverford

1. I Can See Mountains Life On A Houseboat

This band is criminally underrated, and they put out he absolute best album of 2013. It makes me want to go outside and spend some time with my best friends, fall in love, and follow my dreams. This is everything you could ask for from an album and is unbelievably inspiring. Please go take a road trip and listen to this album.

2. Into it. Over it. Intersections

Instrumentally my favorite body of music; the guitars and drum work so well together.

3. A Great Big Pile Of LeavesYou’re Always On My Mind

Some of my favorite bass lines, one of the grooviest albums of 2013

4. Justin TimberlakeThe 20/20 Experience

The most insane harmonies ever recorded. Definitely not what I expected to hear from this album.

5. Earl SweatshirtDoris

Some of the darkest, coolest, most unique beats out there with great lyrics delivered perfectly.

6. Polar Bear ClubDeath Chorus

The singer changed his vocal style for this record and delivered their best melodies over some really powerful music.

7. Laura StevensonWheel

This album really tugs at your heartstrings; beautiful, quiet moments and soaring peaks. And that voice: dammmmmn.

8. Iron ChicThe Constant One

Jam City.

9. State Lines – For The Boats

Jam City pt. 2.

10. Daughter If You Leave

I discovered this album a day before this list was made and it absolutely blew me away.

Early In The Morning by James Vincent McMorrow (2010) (Review)

I've  decided to create a new genre. I call it “beardcore”. Scene heads generally make confessional folk music recorded alone in some isolated building (cabin, hut, beach house etc.) with only acoustic guitars, banjos and whatnot for company. Oh, and they have beards. Now you may think to yourself, ‘This will never take off! How silly of her!’ and, given most of my genre creating, you’d be right (Oberstcore never did take off…), but this scene is not just existing, but is currently thriving. The newest beardcore artist is James Vincent McMorrow’. Joining Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes in the genre, McMorrow hails from the not so green isle of Ireland and is making waves with his debut album Early In The Morning , eleven tracks of atmospheric indie-folk with intelligent musicianship, and more intelligent lyrics. The album starts off with “If I Had A Boat” an initially a capella, atmospheric grower. Starting off quietly, it eases the listener into the record with McMorrow...

Track-By-Track: Forest Life EP by McCafferty

McCafferty 's recent EP, Forest Life, is one of The Alternative Tone's favourite releases so far this year. I caught up with Nick to get a track-by-track on the EP, in order to give us more insight into McCafferty's fabulous imagery and lyrical themes.  Jeff    There was a girl I was friends with in high school named Becky and she was in a relationship with this guy from freshman year until last summer, when their relationship fell apart she told me it happened really fast, that's why the song is so short. I wanted to explore the aspect of a relationship with so much feeling that just ends abruptly and the emptiness that you feel after. I've had people message me and say they wish Jeff was longer, but that's the exact reason I made it so short.  Snakes  I wrote "Snakes" with the mindset of making a song that sort of pokes fun at all these dogs out there in the DIY scene about smoking and partying, it's really simplistic in the lyrics b...

McCafferty Split Up

Sadly, Ohio folk/pop/punkers McCafferty have decided to split up. Read their statement below. Dear Everyone, I'm sorry. It is with great sadness and excitement that I inform you all that McCafferty is coming to an end. I am going to be starting to teach soon, and I am required to get a background check, and I don't believe tha t McCafferty is a professional, respectful representation of myself as a newly trained teacher entering the field of Special Education. Music will always have a place in my heart, but my true passion is teaching. I am leaving the scene of DIY antics to follow my pursuit into adulthood, and I am so happy to have shared my bands music with you all. We truly are the essence of a real DIY band. We came into the scene as a dying star that was doomed to go out in the near future, and that time is now. I have already deleted our twitter/other social media websites but I feel that you all deserve an explanation of what is happening. To all the kids who listen...
