New Jersey's Late Night Beers aren't quite like most other emo bands. Whilst they maintain the wonderful miserablism and sadness that we all know and crave, they present us with an alternative proposition. That proposition in a lovely strain of Smiths-onian indie rock which runs throughout the veins of their modern emo sound. Does Morrissey fronting Dowsing sound good to you? Well, it's time that you listen to Waking, the new three track EP from Late Night Beers.
Despite the brevity of the EP, Late Night Beers already come across as a band who know what they're doing. Throughout the three tracks on here, we're introduced into the pretty, polished world of Late Night Beers. "Isn't It Pretty To Think?" starts the EP off with a sweet, winding indie rock-esque guitar line, before the distinct vocals slowly seep into the record. The slow paced, deliberate feel of the track lends itself to swelling air of epicness and is more than a little bit goosebump inspiring. It's really quite beautiful, actually. "Chiminea" isn't quite as ideal and beautiful as it's predecessor however it's a toe tap instigator which will lodge itself in any listener's brain, regardless of whether it's welcome. Closer "Waking" is a searing track driven by the vocalist which explodes into an airy raw blast.
Late Night Beers are an amazingly precise group of musicians skilled far beyond their relative youth as a band. The Waking EP is an attractive showcase of a talented band who, I can only imagine, would be so exciting live. Overall, the Waking EP is a diamond among the 100s of emo bands floating around at the moment, and I can't wait to hear more from them.
