The Measure Of is a screamily angry five piece post-hardcore band from Austin, Tx. "Is Nothing Sacred" is their new single. And what a cracker of a single it is. Whilst The Measure Of have already managed to prove to us over the course of their last couple of releases that they're certainly renegades to watch out for, it's still a surprise when a band, so relatively new, pack such a punch.

"Is Nothing Sacred" serves two purposes. Firstly, it lures us in with winding, reserved instrumentation that any post-rock band would be proud of, then it, y'know, melts our faces with all of the screaming, shouting and heaviness one could possibly desire from a band of The Measure Of 's ilk. However, The Measure Of command just enough control over vitriolic rage, that it never becomes overdone or less affecting. The lyrics are wonderfully on the spot, managing to be poetic and sad simultaneously. Oh yeah, and they reference The Smiths in a post-hardcore song, which is quite admirable.

Overall, "Is Nothing Sacred" it's a promising sign of things to come. Passionate and restrained, all at once, The Measure Of have already mastered their art form, all that awaits now is to see how they direct it. If you're not convinced by me download it here for free.

Early In The Morning by James Vincent McMorrow (2010) (Review)

I've  decided to create a new genre. I call it “beardcore”. Scene heads generally make confessional folk music recorded alone in some isolated building (cabin, hut, beach house etc.) with only acoustic guitars, banjos and whatnot for company. Oh, and they have beards. Now you may think to yourself, ‘This will never take off! How silly of her!’ and, given most of my genre creating, you’d be right (Oberstcore never did take off…), but this scene is not just existing, but is currently thriving. The newest beardcore artist is James Vincent McMorrow’. Joining Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes in the genre, McMorrow hails from the not so green isle of Ireland and is making waves with his debut album Early In The Morning , eleven tracks of atmospheric indie-folk with intelligent musicianship, and more intelligent lyrics. The album starts off with “If I Had A Boat” an initially a capella, atmospheric grower. Starting off quietly, it eases the listener into the record with McMorrow...
