Interview: Tarantulahawk (February 7, 2013)

I spoke to wonderful upcoming emo band, Tarantulahawk about their plans for the year, their split EP and much more.

 Hi there Tarantulahawk!
Hi Kelly, how are you? This is Marley typing for everyone.

Who are Tarantulahawk and how did you get together?
Tarantulahawk is: Ron Oxley on Vocals, Andrew Golz on guitar and backing vocals, Marley Van Raalte on guitar and vocals, Zach Peterson on drums, and Evan Russell on bass guitar. I, Andrew, and Zach were in a punk band called Hear This that broke up in 2011. Ron was in another local band called From the Mire and we started a side project for the summer. Our original bass player was in Hear This, but when he moved to Colorado Evan Russell came in to fill his position. We liked the music we were jamming so we decided to keep doing it and now here we are!

How would you describe your music for the unacquainted?
Most people would probably say we are emo or post-hardcore which is fine. But we play whatever sounds good to us, we don't subscribe to any specific label.

How did you get your name?
I saw a facebook post about the insect with the second most painful sting, the tarantula hawk. I thought it would be a horrible name for a emo/indie band. So I told the rest of the members and they thought it was a funny and a great idea!

What are you up to at the moment?
Just finished practice and now doing this interview. Everyone is yelling out gross answers to these questions so it's taking us forever to finish it.

What's your aim for the band?
Like instant messenger?

How was recording the ...Happy Again split with Cardinal?
It was sad. and fun. surreal too. and a lot of frustratingness. overall pretty swell though, thanks for asking!

Why did you decide to sign with Still Here Records?
SHR is run by Zach, our drummer, so he put us on!

Are you writing new material at the moment? Is there any plans for a full length?
Yes we are! We have a few different releases planned for this year so stay tuned. Our closest one will be within the next two months!

What are your plans for 2013?
Big things. Big large things. A tour maybe, but that will be small. so some small little things as well as the big huge things.

Who are your favourite bands?
I am the Avalanche, Glassjaw, Taking Back Sunday, Coheed and Cambria, Third Eye Blind, and Tundras (they our friend check em out!)

Three fun facts about the band?
1. We like board games.
2. We like pizza.
3. We are all gang members

If Tarantulahawk was a sci fi series, what would it be?
Arrested development count?

Final words?
Thank you so much for interviewing us, this was the first time we've ever done it. We're nervous. Hope we did okay! We tried really hard to be funny.
On an unrelated note, I heard baking an egg into a pizza is the best thing in the world.

McCafferty Split Up

Sadly, Ohio folk/pop/punkers McCafferty have decided to split up. Read their statement below. Dear Everyone, I'm sorry. It is with great sadness and excitement that I inform you all that McCafferty is coming to an end. I am going to be starting to teach soon, and I am required to get a background check, and I don't believe tha t McCafferty is a professional, respectful representation of myself as a newly trained teacher entering the field of Special Education. Music will always have a place in my heart, but my true passion is teaching. I am leaving the scene of DIY antics to follow my pursuit into adulthood, and I am so happy to have shared my bands music with you all. We truly are the essence of a real DIY band. We came into the scene as a dying star that was doomed to go out in the near future, and that time is now. I have already deleted our twitter/other social media websites but I feel that you all deserve an explanation of what is happening. To all the kids who listen...
