Hi there, Joseph Albert!
Hello, The Alternative Tone! Thanks so much for taking the time to ask me these questions.
For those who are unacquainted, who is Joseph Albert? And how would you describe your music for anyone who hasn't heard you before?
Joseph Albert is a project that I, Joseph Albert Mauro started back in 2006. I released my first album, an EP titled Inventions in 2008. Since then I have written and recorded 2 more full lengths titled Night Time Astronaut and Via Oxygen. Joseph Albert is a solo/singer songwriter project. I write and perform all the parts. I would describe my music as honest and personal.
How did you get into music?
My way into music was through my elementary school band. When I was about 9 years old I wanted to play the drums and so my parents decided to get me drum lessons on top of what I was learning in the school band. From there I started playing in bands with friends and did some touring in the early 2000's. I always loved the idea of playing piano and writing my own songs. So, I got a casio keyboard and started messing around with it. Next thing you know I had a few song ideas that eventually turned into songs.
How has 2012 been for you?
The year 2012 has been great! I released my 2nd full length album titled Via Oxygen. And have been promoting that along with my other albums on the internet. I haven't played a show in about 2 years, but I am starting to get back out there now.
You released Via Oxygen earlier this year. How was the post-album cycle for you?
To be honest, the post-album cycle has been slow. I am in the process of booking some shows around the Brooklyn and NYC area and do have a show coming up on August 22, 2012 at Pianos in NYC. I hope to get some more shows going and keep the momentum.
How did the songwriting process for Via Oxygen go?
The songwriting process for Via Oxygen was pretty easy. The songs on this album are songs that I wrote a long time ago, so it was a matter of freshening them up and recording them. The album was finished being recorded at the end of 2011, but I went right into recording drums from another band and it took a while to get finished.
Which track from the album is your favourite, whether it be to play or just to listen to?
That is a hard question. If I had to pick one track as my favourite, it would be the title track, Via Oxygen. I love drone and repetition in that song.
What do you hope to achieve by the end of the year?
I hope to have played a few more shows and finish writing the next full length, which I hope to record the begining of next year.
Who/what influences you as an artist?
A huge influence to me is Ben Gibbard. I love just about everything he has done...a great songwriter.
What bands do you recommend?
I recommend listening to Youth Lagoon, Gem Club, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Fang Island, Japandroids, Moonface, Hannibal Montana...I could go on for hours. Oh, I just rediscovered a band from a few years ago called Statistics, such a great band!
If Joseph Albert's music was a brand of shoe, what brand would it be?
I would love to say Vans...specifically slip-ons, because I wear them all the time, but i'm not sure if i'm that cool.
