How did Broken Heart Records come about and what's the story so far?
Broken Heart Records actually started in March 2012. I had always wanted to start a record label, and it seemed to be the right time. We are celebrating one year this month. It's been a crazy year with lots of ups and downs. For our first release, we worked with Socratic, and it was a dream come true. They were one of the bands BHR really wanted to work with even before the label was created . We released Socratic - Lunch for the sky for the first time on vinyl as well as Socratic - The Album, which was the most underrated release of 2012, in my opinion.
Our third release was Abel - Make it Right on vinyl. I was really happy with how the records came out.l. The band is super talented and have a bright future ahead. We just need to get more people to hear it. Our Fourth release was a Compilation of Unsigned Bands, Unsigned|Unrest. All of the proceeds go to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. We had other projects we worked on this year, but a couple of those fell through.
What are your plans for the label in 2013?
2013 is going to be a great year for us. We just released The Winter Passing - Scrapbook EP on CD. We are excited to be working with those guys. The EP is fantastic, so make sure you pick it up. We are also working Eyes On Me from Lynchburg, VA. They are the first band to sign on to our new 7" Split Series that will feature Unsigned bands. We are working on a couple other things as we speak.
Our other big project for 2013 is Day at the Fair. They enter the studio in a little over a month to record their follow up to The Rocking Chair Years. We will be releasing both albums on vinyl as well as the new project on CD. We have been working on this for a year now so we are really excited to get this one out to the masses.
What's important in the bands that you work with? How do you choose bands to work with?
I think the most important thing for us is the music. It's hard to sell music you don't believe in. We love our bands. We can pretty much decide on a band after one listen. Not to say that a decision can't change, but we have a good idea once we hear one song.
We choose our bands a couple of different ways. There are bands we seek out, like Socratic. We knew we wanted to work with them so we contacted them. Some bands have sent demos that we just couldn't pass on. We do listen to every demo sent to us and try to respond to the best of our ability. We have decided to work with some bands based on those demos. The Winter Passing is a good example of this.
What's your overall aim for the label?
I think our goal as a label is to just keep releasing music we love. It's not easy to run a label, but the upside is better than the lows. We will continue to bring people the best product possible until it's not fun anymore, but for right now we are loving our unpaid job.
