Well, that time of the year has come again, y'know, the end and, as anyone reading this should probably have guessed, I've listened to a lot of music in the past twelve months. So, instead of diving straight in, headfirst, with The Alternative Tone's albums of the year, the following is a list of the best EPs (Extended Plays, for the old school) from the past year!

1. Postcards by Gatherer
Probably the break out band of the year for me, Gatherer's Postcards blew me away. A face-blistering, yet highly emotional few minutes, Postcards notified me firstly of Gatherer's existence, and secondly of the existence of Glass Nail Records, probably the break out label of the year. Fast paced and lyrically impressive, Gatherer is the first time I've been this excited about a band this heavy, since hearing La Dispute's Wildlife.

2. Undersea by The Antlers
The Antlers have a knack for beautifully tender music and once again they tick all the boxes. Yes, we shall never get Hospice again, but another Hospice would be The Antlers staying still and not moving forward. Undersea takes the tenderness of previous Antlers' releases and adds it to an all the more surreal edge. In a weird way, the EP feels like it's being played undersea, but it is a truly beautiful few moments under the sea.

3. Leaving by Arrows In Her
Another of the heavier releases on the list, Leaving took me completely by surprise. With their edgy take on emo, Arrows In her created an album equal parts rock and emotion. Sounding like a heavier version of the twinkle daddy bands everyone's starting to love so much, Leaving is a bundle of youthful energy teamed with a mature tiredness.

4. Eugenics by Undesirable People
One of three pop-punk EPs on this list, Eugenics is probably the most energetic by far. The entire EP is an enthusiastic bounce which is relentlessly moshable. However, Undesirable People don't give up on maturity for fun, and with lyrics that bring to mind the likes of The Wonder Years, Undesirable People are your typical American Pie soundtrack pop punk band.
5. Daniel Rossen - Silent Hour / Golden Mile
It must be great fun being Daniel Rossen. One of the best indie rock albums of 2012 with Grizzly Bear? BOOM! One of the best indie rock EPs of the year? BOOM! Yeah, Daniel Rossen is probably descended from some Gods or something. Silent Hour/Golden Mile is a beautiful EP. It's basically Grizzly Bear goes solo, but there's no need for it to be anything else.
