TAT: Hey there, Fight The World!FTW: What's good Alternative Tone! This is our first interview so we're happy you asked us!
For the record, and the previously unacquainted, who is Fight The World? We're 5 guys who share one dream and one girlfriend. But more importantly we're a PopPunk/Hardcore band out of Corpus Christi, Texas. We're best friends who have been into the same music since middle school who turned that music into our own.
Fight The World is:Jonathan Hadden-VocalsSteven Pollard-GuitarZach Barrera-BassJohn Nelson-GuitarGrant Eddins-Drums
How did you guys get together? Some of us were in a band called Sold Fresh and another band Feels Like Friday in middle school and early high school around 2007, but finally in the summer of 2010 we got together and made DAD and with a quick name change after became Fight The World. We were the only straight edge kids in our high school who all liked the same music so that basically led us to write our own music.
How has 2012 been for you, so far?Bloody brilliant. We went on tour early this year for the first time, which was our first taste of the road. Then in the Spring we played some shows, leading up to the chance to record our latest EP. It's the most mature music we have written compared to our older stuff and it was exciting to get that out this Summer. Other than that some of our members were able to go on tour with some other bands from here in Corpus Christi, Lazy Eye and Progress. There wasn't too much opportunity to play this summer, but we're looking to change that for this fall and the rest of the year.
You recently released the Contrast EP. What was the recording process like for you guys? The Sound Machine Studio here in Corpus is were we recorded our Summer EP in 2011. It was a learning process, and luckily we improved a lot from that recording to produce what we think is a much more mature and legitimate EP with Contrast. We recruited a few of our friends to do some guest vocals from Progress and Aspire (RIP). We really like the sound, Mason Shirley, the producer really helped us out. One fun fact to tell about is the vocals at the end of Soviet Spies, they're actually two different vocal tracks, one out of the right and one out of the left. Doing intricate stuff like that was sweet. Oh and gang vocals are always fun to record. You're on the bill for the Winterror Tour around Texas, is there any chance of a further reaching tour soon?Yeah, during any breaks we have from school you best believe we be on that road chasin' dreams. But yeah this winter we're looking to go on tour, Hopefully touching the West Coast.
What bands have an influence on Fight The World? Who do you guys listen to?Grant (drummer) likes Dashboard ConfessionalJon (singer) listens to a lot of Ivy League and This Will Destroy YouZach (bass) jams SlayerJohn (guitar) loves Transit and Title Fight, and FireworksSteven (other guitar) gets down to Have Heart and Such GoldAll these different bands influence the way we all write songs and the outcome is Fight the World. You've released Contrast on a 'name your price' platform. Do you believe that making music available for free is another advantage to bands or is just something that's necessary for young bands starting out today? We started off as young kids enjoying bands that put out there stuff for free, so why would we want to change that? If we want people to enjoy our music, lets let them have it. If they want to donate and help us out, that's what's up.
Any chance of more material before the end of the year? We're always writing new songs but realistically we may have a chance to put out a split 7 inch sometime later this year. We'll keep you posted though!
If Fight The World was an animal, what animal would it be?Probably a piranha, you ever seen Piranha 3DD? That was wild.
Final words?Listen to our EP Contrast and download it for free at our bandcamp. fighttheworld.bandcamp.com
